Small changes that make a big difference

Not everyone needs everything. We’ll ask what’s hard at the moment and fit what helps, nothing more.

  • Level-access shower

No tray lip to step over. The floor falls gently to a drain, so a wheeled shower chair rolls straight in.

  • Grab rails where you need them

Fixed into solid wall or proper backing, not just plasterboard, at the heights that suit the person using them.

  • Fold-down shower seat

Folds flat against the wall when it’s not needed, so the shower still works for everyone else.

  • Comfort-height toilet

A taller pan makes sitting and standing easier, with a rail alongside for support.

  • Safe hot water

Thermostatic valves stop the water getting dangerously hot, with lever controls that are easy to grip.

  • Room to move

Wider doorways, an outward-opening or sliding door, and space planned for a walking frame or wheelchair.

Grants and VAT relief can help

Many people don’t realise help is available. If you or someone you care for is disabled and the bathroom has become a struggle, it’s worth asking Croydon Council about a Disabled Facilities Grant before paying privately.

We can’t apply for you, but we can give you the quote you need and build what’s been agreed. Our guide to the Disabled Facilities Grant in Croydon walks through the steps.

  • Disabled Facilities Grants through Croydon Council, up to £30,000 in England
  • Means-tested for adults, usually after an occupational therapist’s assessment
  • VAT zero-rating may apply to adapting a bathroom for a disabled person
  • We provide the itemised quote the council or HMRC rules ask for

Designed around the person, not a catalogue

  1. Tell us what’s difficult now

Getting in and out of the bath, standing for long, reaching the taps. The quote form asks, or just call us.

  2. Occupational therapist, if you have one

If an OT has assessed the home, share their recommendations and we’ll design to them. If you’re applying for a grant, the council usually arranges this.

  3. A price for the work

Written so it can go straight into a grant application, with each item listed.

  4. Built around the person

Rail heights, seat position and controls set for the person who’ll use them, and checked with them before we leave.

Questions people ask

Can I get a grant for an accessible bathroom?

You may be able to. Croydon Council, like every council in England, offers Disabled Facilities Grants for adaptations like level-access showers. The grant is means-tested for adults (not for children) and usually follows an assessment by an occupational therapist. In England the mandatory grant goes up to £30,000. Contact the council’s adaptations team to start, and we can provide the quote they ask for.

Do I have to pay VAT on an accessible bathroom?

Possibly not. Adapting a bathroom for a disabled person’s use in their home can be zero-rated for VAT (HMRC VAT Notice 701/7), but conditions apply and you’ll need to sign an eligibility declaration. Ask us when we quote and we’ll tell you whether the work is likely to qualify.

Can we keep a bath?

Yes. Some people find a bath easier than a shower, especially with a bath lift or a bath with a door. We’ll talk through what works for the person using it and anyone helping them.

Will it look clinical?

It doesn’t have to. Grab rails come in brushed brass, matt black and chrome as well as white, a level-access shower looks like any modern walk-in shower, and good tiles do the rest.

How long will the bathroom be out of use?

We plan the job to keep that as short as possible and tell you before we start. If it’s the only bathroom and the person needs a toilet throughout, tell us and we’ll plan around it.

Make the bathroom easier to use

Tell us who the bathroom is for and what’s difficult now. We’ll suggest what would help and give you a price.
