How a bath becomes a walk-in shower
Four stages, usually with the rest of the bathroom left exactly as it is.
Bath out
The bath, its panel and the tiles around it come out. We check the floor underneath, which is often hiding years of slow leaks.
Waste and water
The bath’s waste is usually close to where the shower drains, so it can often be reused or moved a short way. New supplies go in for the shower valve.
Tray or wet room floor
A low-profile tray in the bath’s footprint, or a tanked floor that falls to a drain if you want no step at all.
Waterproof, tile and finish
Shower walls boarded and tanked, then tiled. Glass panel, valve and head fitted, and every joint sealed.
Low tray or level floor?
Both fit in the space the bath leaves. The difference is the step and the work underneath.
- Step in
- Low-profile tray:A few centimetres
- Level wet room floor:None at all
- Work involved
- Low-profile tray:Less: the tray does the waterproofing
- Level wet room floor:More: the whole floor is tanked and formed to fall
- Upstairs
- Low-profile tray:Fits almost anywhere
- Level wet room floor:Depends on the joists, we check first
- Best for
- Low-profile tray:Most bathrooms and budgets
- Level wet room floor:Wheelchair users, or anyone who wants no step

Why people swap the bath
Most of us shower every day and use the bath a few times a year. In a small Croydon bathroom, the bath takes up the most space for the least use.
A walk-in shower in its place gives you a proper shower, a room that feels bigger and a bathroom that keeps working as your needs change.
- No more climbing over the side of the bath
- A bigger, better shower in a small room
- Easier to clean: one glass panel and a flat tray
- Room for a seat and grab rails if they’re needed later
What a conversion includes
- Taking out the bath and panel
- Disposal of the old bath
- Waste and supply alterations
- Low tray or formed wet room floor
- Boarding and tanking the shower walls
- Tiling the shower area
- Thermostatic valve and shower head
- Glass panel, silicone and trims
Priced separately if you need it
- Retiling the whole room
- A new extractor fan
- Grab rails and a fold-down seat
- Moving the shower to another wall
Questions people ask
How long does a bath to shower conversion take?
It’s one of the quicker bathroom jobs, because the rest of the room usually stays as it is. How long depends on whether you want a tray or a level wet room floor and how much retiling is needed. You’ll get an honest number of working days with your quote.
Will removing the bath affect the value of my house?
If it’s the only bath in the house, it might put off some buyers with young children. If there’s another bath, or this is a flat or a bungalow, a big walk-in shower is usually a selling point. We’ll talk it through honestly before you decide.
Can I keep my existing tiles?
Sometimes. The wall where the shower goes needs to be waterproofed properly, so it’s usually retiled. The rest of the room can often stay, and we can match or contrast the new tiles.
Can I get help paying for it if it’s for someone with a disability?
Possibly. A bath to level-access shower swap is one of the most common adaptations paid for by a Disabled Facilities Grant, and the work may be zero-rated for VAT. See our guide to the grant in Croydon.
