The grant in brief
The essentials, from Croydon Council and GOV.UK. Always check the council’s own pages for the latest.
Up to £30,000
Croydon Council pays for the adaptations needed, up to £30,000 including fees, if you qualify.
Means-tested for adults
You complete a financial assessment, and the grant depends on income and savings. Grants for disabled children are not means-tested.
Owners and tenants
Owners and tenants can apply, with a certificate of ownership or tenancy. Tenants need their landlord’s agreement to the work.
Bathrooms are common
Swapping a bath for a level-access shower is one of the most common adaptations a grant pays for.
How to apply in Croydon
The order Croydon Council sets out. The occupational therapist’s visit comes before any quotes or plans.
Contact adult social services
Croydon Council asks you to start with its social services for adults referrals team: the address, the adaptation you need and how to contact you.
Occupational therapist visit
An occupational therapist visits the home and recommends the adaptations that meet your needs, such as a level-access shower in place of the bath.
Apply for the recommended work
You apply for the work the therapist recommended. Owners and private tenants are given a caseworker to help with the form; housing association tenants should get help from their landlord.
Wait for written approval
The council says it will tell you in writing within six months of your application. Don’t start work before then: if you do, you won’t get the grant.

Where we come in
We can’t apply for the grant for you, and we don’t decide what work is needed: that’s the occupational therapist’s job.
What we can do is price the recommended work clearly, answer questions about what’s possible in your bathroom and build it once it’s approved.
Read Croydon Council’s own pages on the Disabled Facilities Grant and GOV.UK’s overview.
- An itemised quote for the work the therapist recommends
- Level-access showers, rails, seats and comfort-height toilets
- Nothing starts until you have the council’s written approval
- Plumbing, tiling and electrics by one team
Questions people ask
Can I get a grant for a wet room in Croydon?
If an occupational therapist recommends a level-access shower or wet room, and you meet the means test, a Disabled Facilities Grant can pay for it, up to £30,000 including fees. Start by contacting Croydon Council’s social services for adults referrals team.
Can I choose my own bathroom fitter?
Ask your caseworker how the council handles contractors and quotes in your case. If you need a quote for the recommended work, we can provide an itemised one.
What if I start the work before the grant is approved?
Don’t. Croydon Council says that if you start work before you receive approval, it will not be able to give you a grant.
I don’t qualify for a grant. Is there any other help?
Adapting a bathroom for a disabled person’s use in their home can be zero-rated for VAT under HMRC VAT Notice 701/7, whether or not there is a grant. Conditions apply, and you’ll be asked to sign an eligibility declaration.
I live in Wallington or Beckenham. Is it the same?
The grant works the same way across England, but you apply to your own council: Sutton for Wallington, Bromley for Beckenham.
