What’s wrong with your shower?
Common shower problems, and what usually causes them.
Leaking through the ceiling
Usually a failed tray seal, a cracked tray or a leaking waste. We find where the water is getting out before replacing anything.
Weak or no pressure
Low mains pressure, a blocked head, a failing pump or the wrong shower for the hot water system. We work out which, then fix that.
Cold, or the temperature jumps
A tired thermostatic cartridge, or a valve that’s not suited to your boiler. Often a part, not a whole new shower.
Mouldy seals and loose tiles
Old silicone and grout let water behind the tiles. Resealing early saves a much bigger job later.
A new shower fitted
Mixer, electric or power shower, over a bath, in an enclosure or as a walk-in. Matched to your water pressure and hot water.
Replacing an old shower
Swapping a worn-out electric or mixer shower for a new one, and tidying the wall where the old one was.
Electric, mixer or power shower?
The right shower depends on the hot water system you already have.
- Hot water from
- Electric:Heats its own from the mains
- Mixer:Your boiler or cylinder
- Power shower:Your cylinder, pumped
- Best with
- Electric:Any system, or as a backup
- Mixer:A combi that can keep up, or mains-pressure cylinder
- Power shower:A gravity-fed cylinder with a tank in the loft
- Watch out for
- Electric:Flow drops in winter when the mains is cold
- Mixer:Pressure drops if someone runs a tap
- Power shower:Uses hot water quickly, and the pump can be noisy
- Needs
- Electric:Its own electrical supply
- Mixer:Hot and cold supplies to the valve
- Power shower:A pump and an electrical supply

Questions people ask
Do you repair showers or only fit new ones?
Both. A lot of shower problems are a single part, a seal or a blockage. We’ll tell you honestly whether a repair is worth it or a replacement makes more sense.
My shower is leaking through the ceiling. What should I do?
Stop using the shower until it’s been looked at. If water is coming through near a light fitting, turn that circuit off at the fuse box. Then send us a photo of the shower and the ceiling below.
Should I have an electric or a mixer shower?
It depends on your hot water. With a combi boiler a mixer works well if the boiler can keep up. With a hot water cylinder you may need a pump for decent pressure. An electric shower heats its own water, so it works whatever your boiler. We check before recommending one.
Can you fit an electric shower?
Yes. Electric showers need their own supply from the consumer unit, and the work is notifiable under Part P of the Building Regulations. It’s certified as the rules require.
